How do I get a referral to see a specialist?

Specialty Care and Referral
How to get specialty care
Please see your PCP first. Your PCP will oversee all of your care. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners provide many of the same services as your PCP, and you may be seen by one of them when you go for care. Your PCP may also refer you to a specialist or others for certain tests or treatment if your PCP feels that a specialist can give you the best care for your condition. Your PCP will give you a slip of paper (called a referral) that tells the other doctor that the visits were approved. Be sure to take this slip with you to your appointment. If your PCP does not approve the visit, you may have to pay the bills. If you are suffering from serious ongoing medical conditions, you may be able to choose a specialist as your PCP. Please call Member Services so we may tell you if you qualify.

If you want to see a specialist, but Health Right said it wouldn’t pay for the visit, you can:

  • Make an appointment with another doctor in Health Right’s network and get a second opinion
  • Appeal our decision (see page 43 on Appeals)
  • Ask for a Fair Hearing (see page 44 on Fair Hearings)
  • Please click on the link below to get to our online directory for a list of specialists in our network.
Click here for our list of Specialists. You may also call Member Services for further assistance at 202-218-0380.
